Finding the perfect bra isn’t always as simple as choosing your usual size. Sometimes the cups fit beautifully but the band feels too tight, or perhaps the band is comfortable while the cups don’t quite sit correctly. Understanding sister sizing can help you make small adjustments that often lead to a much better overall fit.
New to The Lingerie Lowdown Knowledge Base? Before exploring sister sizing, we recommend reading our guides How should a bra fit and How to measure your bra size correctly, as they explain the fundamentals of bra fitting and sizing.
What is sister sizing?
Sister sizing is the process of changing both the band size and cup size while keeping approximately the same cup volume.
For example, if a 34C feels too tight around the band but the cups fit well, you could try a 36B. Likewise, if the band feels too loose, a 32D may provide a better fit while maintaining a similar cup capacity.
Although the cup letter changes, the actual cup volume remains broadly comparable.
Why does it work?
Many people assume that moving from a C cup to a D cup automatically means a larger bra. In reality, cup size is directly linked to band size, so a 32D and a 36D have noticeably different cup volumes because they’re designed for different body measurements.
When should you try sister sizing?
Sister sizing may be worth considering if:
- The cups fit well but the band feels too tight
- The cups fit well but the band rides up
- Your preferred size isn’t available
- Different brands fit slightly differently.
It’s intended as a fitting adjustment rather than a replacement for wearing your correct size.
Does every brand fit the same?
No. One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned from more than ten years of independent reviews is that bra sizing varies considerably between manufacturers. Different fabrics, construction methods and design philosophies all influence how a bra fits, which is why independent reviews are so valuable.
Common misconceptions
One of the biggest myths is that sister sizing simply means choosing the next cup size up or down. It doesn’t. To maintain a similar cup volume, both the band and cup letter must change together.
Our experience
After reviewing bras from hundreds of brands over more than a decade, we’ve seen countless examples where a presenter initially believed a bra simply wasn’t suitable, only to discover that a neighbouring sister size transformed the fit completely. Small changes in band size often make a surprising difference to comfort, support and confidence.
We’ve also found that sizing consistency varies enormously between brands. Two bras carrying exactly the same size label can feel completely different once worn. That’s why our reviews focus on real-world fit rather than simply repeating a manufacturer’s size chart. Experience has taught us that understanding sister sizing is one of the simplest ways shoppers can make better purchasing decisions.
